Hello
You might be wondering why I chose the phrase direct AF counselling. I’ll be honest, I’ve always been a direct sort of person. It has served me well both professionally and personally. It allows a genuine depth of knowing and of conversation. It allows closeness, change, and acceptance in really beautiful and unexpected ways.
My clients frequently describe me as a quirky sort of aunt with a weird sense of humour, a lot of psychology knowledge, and a firm mattress approach in challenging them while being honest and respectful. This approach definitely does not work for everyone - I am no mama bear - but if you’re looking for clear psychoeducation, honesty, and firm support in a non judgemental space - you might like this style.
I studied at the University of Western Ontario, hold a dual bachelor’s degree in Biology and Medical Sciences (BSc), and a Master’s in Counselling Psychology (MACP) from Yorkville University.
I have specific training in emotion focused, experiential and cognitive approaches to therapy, and with couples counselling. My personal favourites and what I find to be the most useful are Internal Family Systems, Emotion Focused Therapy, and the Gottman Method. That said, every indidivual has different preferences for learning theory and about themselves. I’ll ask that you have an open heart and mind in the therapy room - and we can implement and use the tools that most suit you and the dynamic that we have in the therapeutic relationship.
One last thing - we will absolutely talk about your psychosocial history - in great detail. How you got here is exceedingly important. It is my experience that an excellent way of understanding the present, is combing through the past. This will shine a light on understanding how your nervous system and mind have developed through time in different spaces, with different people, and with yourself.
